Minister responds to Moss Review

Earlier this year, the Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, David Littleproud, appointed Mr Philip Moss, AM, to conduct an independent Review of the Regulatory Capavility and Culture of the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources in the Regulation of Live Animal Exports. The review was completed and delivered to the Minister in September, and the Government has now responded to the recommendations.

The Government has accepted the findings of the Review, and agrees to support the implementation of the recommendations, key of which are:

  • Ensuring that the Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock are reviewed on a regular basis to reflect industry, scientific and regulatory developments and community expectations concerning live animal exports
  • The establishment of an Animal Welfare Branch within the Department
  • The establishment of an Inspector-General of Live Animal Exports
  • Improvements to internal Department regulatory practice, performance and culture
