The Butchers Advocate, November 2020

The Boocock family name has been in the meat industry for over a century, with humble beginnings in Geelong in 1905. Now in 2020, the butchering tradition has reached it’s fourth generation, and operates on Queensland’s gorgeous Sunshine Coast.

Boocock’s Quality Meats owner Marcus started working in the industry as an apprentice at the young age of 14 in his father’s shop, and still retains the same values of the small family business that started it all.

“I’m still working with the same crew I was with 20 years ago and our staff are just like family.”

This small family business ideology is weaved into their business style too, as they are very involved in their local community, especially through social media.

“We’re finding that social media has given us a massive platform to engage with our customers, and vice-versa, in real time. We love seeing what our customers are creating at home and we’re stoked that we can share our love of food with them at home too.”

Boocock’s are known for having a wide product range of high quality, grass-fed meats and have clients who travel from out of town, chasing specific products that they stock. They have specialist cuts available such as dry aged beef, and make their sausages fresh every day in store using the traditional Boocock family recipe.

They find that caring about the environment and taking a more sustainable approach to their business really resonates with their local community.

“We use home compostable, eco cane trays and work with suppliers and farmers who practice sustainable and regenerative farming. Our customers respond really well to this approach.”

Always innovating and improving their business, the next big step is starting a home delivery service in the new year.

When asked whether he has any advice for someone starting work in the industry, Marcus says “have a good sense of humour and don’t be afraid to have a yarn with your customers. You never know who you might meat!”
