Legislation to establish the part-day public holiday on Christmas Eve was passed by Queensland Parliament on Wednesday 27th November 2019.
It will officially kick in from 6.00 pm on December 24 and will remain in place until midnight.
Back in August 2019, the Queensland State Government announced their plan to make Christmas Eve from 6,pm until midnight a public holiday. This would mean that employees working after 6,pm on that day would be paid public holiday penalty rates.
The Queensland Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace provided a 28 day consultation period (which ended on 2nd September 2019) to be able to provide points of view for and against the proposal. AMIC subsequently sent a survey out to Queensland members seeking feedback, which has been collated and included in an AMIC submission to the Palaszczuk Government opposing the plan.
