Rod and Julie Leaver of Edge Hill Butchery in Cairns have just had their second major win as AMIC’s Queensland Retailer of the Year, becoming the only owners to ever win the award twice. The couple took out the award for their previous shop 6 years ago, and couldn’t be more proud to be named the state’s best butchery.

“We try so hard to make this work and stand out from everybody else,” Rod said, recognising that innovation is one of the key areas to success. Gaining a liquor license and selling fine wines to match with their meat products is just one example of the pair’s innovative spirit. “There was quite a bit of criteria needing to be judged on. It is very exciting for the north, to have the quality and the shop we have up here.

“They looked at customer service, store presentation, innovation, value-adding to products, community involvement, industry commitment and training and development.”

And the Leavers are certainly making the most of their win, with stories splashed over newspapers all across the area. The media attention they have been receiving since is one of the main benefits to winning an award like Retailer of the Year. “It’s the highest award you can achieve,” Rod said.

The two also won the Best Butcher’s Gourmet Burger category at the state finals of the Sausage King competition at the Ekka in Brisbane, and took home a smoker for first prize.

Established in 1947, the Collins Ave shop was bought by Rod and Julie leaver in 2016, and is known around the area for its friendly staff, high quality meat and for constantly improving and reinventing its successful business.
