The Australian Meat Industry Council’s (AMIC) Queensland Apprentice of the Year (AOTY) competition is set to kick off in Emerald on Wednesday, 5 June, taking place at Fair Dinkum Fresh, Emerald in the first of four AOTY competitions held to determine the QLD Apprentice of the Year.

QLD apprentice butchers will undertake practical challenges and a theory exam to compete for the title Queensland Apprentice of the Year 2024.

In a change from prior years, AMIC QLD have teamed up with World Skills to align competitions in the state. Lead organizer and Queensland State Manager Tony Morgan says the new format is set to show how united the industry is.

“Bringing the two competitions together is a great show of unification, demonstrating that industry is working together with a common of goals.

“To have a number of locally based apprentices’ butchers demonstrate their skills on Emerald Show Day is great for the region and a fantastic opportunity for all apprentices to showcase their talents and the meat industry to the community.” said Mr Morgan.

Three more AOTY / World Skills Apprentices’ competitions will be held in QLD throughout June and July with the overall Queensland winner and World Skills regional winners to be announced at the annual AMIC QLD award evening to be held later in 2024.

Other QLD Competition Dates:

  • Gympie: Gympie Meat Hall, 23 June
  • Toowoomba: QLD Choice Meats, 30 June
  • Brisbane: Meat at Billy’s, 7 July

The QLD AOTY will go on to represent Queensland in the AMIC’s National Apprentice of the Year final in February 2025, and four other apprentices will be representing QLD at the World Skills National Final next year.

AMIC would like to thank D.R. Johnston, as this year’s naming rights sponsor, co-sponsor World Skills QLD and all our QLD statewide sponsors for their continued support of Independent Local Butchers and the meat industry.
