Australian smallgoods producers have taken top honours at the DFV Quality International Competition for Sausages and Ham 2025, hosted as part of IFFA – the world’s leading and biggest trade fair for the meat industry – in Frankfurt, Germany on Tuesday, with several businesses recognised for their exceptional craftsmanship and product quality.

The competition is organised by the German Butchers’ Association (DFV), with close cooperation from the Australian Meat Industry Council (AMIC). The international event included participation from 331 Australian smallgoods producers and is considered one of the most prestigious platforms for showcasing innovation and excellence in meat processing and smallgoods production.

From hickory & peppercorn bacon and smoked leg ham to unique specialty smallgoods like wagyu bresaola and free-range prosciutto, there were 19 Platinum Awards for Australian producers. This honour is reserved for products that achieved an outstanding evaluation from the international judging panel.

Oliver Stankovski, AMIC General Manager for Smallgoods, says these outstanding results speak volumes about the quality, innovation and pride of Australia’s independent butchers and smallgoods makers.

“These awards not only reflect the exceptional standards of our local industry but also demonstrate the global competitiveness of Australian-made meat products. We’re incredibly proud to support and promote these businesses and have them recognised for their hard work on the world stage.”

Earlier in February, IFFA sent representatives to Australia to judge the 331 entrants, grading them on appearance, consistency, smell and taste. Along with 19 Platinum Award winners, Australian producers received 119 Gold Medals, 135 Silver Medals and 72 Bronze Medals

To be eligible to compete in IFFA, entrants first had to prove themselves worthy of a Gold Award from the Australian Charcuterie Excellence Awards, which has been running since 2022, in partnership with Australian Pork Limited and MLA.

“This year marked the first time Australia entered our award-winning smallgoods products into this prestigious international competition, and it demonstrates our winners can stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in the world. It’s a powerful endorsement of Australian excellence, innovation and craftsmanship,” Oliver says.
